Whitecaps 15 - Silver Hawks 2

The West Michigan Whitecaps began the defense of their Midwest League championship by defeating the South Bend Silver Hawks 15-2 on Thursday night.

The Whitecaps came out swinging in the first inning and never looked back. They erupted for 10 runs on 5 hits. Seven of those runs were unearned. Included in that inning was a 2-run homer by Casper Wells. The 'Caps added 2 more runs in the fifth inning. They would add three more runs in the sixth inning.

Eight walks and five errors by the Silver Hawks helped contribute to West Michigan's score.

All but one starter had a hit tonight. Justin Henry had 2 doubles and led the team with 3 RBI. Kyle Peter and Casper Wells each had 2 hits and 2 RBI. Audy Ciriaco tripled and drove in 2 runs.

Veteran Whitecap Ramon Garcia pitched a great game for West Michigan. He pitched 6 shut out innings. He allowed 4 hits and struck out 5 batters. He was the winning pitcher.

Kelvin Cedano and Santo Mieses followed Garcia in relief. Cedano went 1 2/3 innings. He allowed 2 runs, 4 hits, 3 walks, and struck out 3. Mieses pitched 1 1/3 innings. He struck out 2 batters.

The 'Caps will play game two of this four-game series tomorrow. Game time is 6:30pm eastern.
