The West Michigan Whitecaps have announced that three recent Detroit Tigers draft picks will join the ballclub. Catcher Alex Avila, pitcher Brett Jacobson, and outfielder Andy Dirks will get their first taste of pro ball with the Whitecaps.
Alex Avila is a left handed hitting catcher. He spent his college days at the University of Alabama. He was a fifth round pick in the '08 draft. He is the son of Detroit Tigers assistant general manager Al Avila.
Brett Jacobson is a right handed pitcher. He went to Vanderbilt University. He was a fourth round pick by Detroit. So far he's the highest draft pick that has signed with the Tigers.
Andy Dirks is a left handed outfielder. He's a product of Wichita Sate. He was an eighth round pick of Detroit. He was a college teammate of Whitecaps closer Noah Krol.
In case you didn't know the Midwest League All-Star Game was on Tuesday. The West was victorious, winning 5-4 in 10 innings. Chris Carlson started at first base for the East. He had a hit and drove in a run. Kyle Peter was 0-3. Alfredo Figaro pitched an inning, allowed 2 hits, and walked a batter. Jon Kibler pitched 2/3 of an inning, allowed 2 hits, and an earned run.
Here's some bad news. Chris Carlson broke a bone in his left hand after being hit by a pitch at Tuesday's All-Star Game. He's expected to be out at least 8 weeks. That definitely hurts the ballclub. He'll probably be back just before the playoffs.
