The Whitecaps will enter the 2008 Midwest League playoffs as the first half wildcard winners. Losing to Fort Wayne 8-4, coupled with a Lansing Lugnuts blowout of Midland secured the first place finish for Lansing, with the Whitecaps officially winning the wild card.
Fort Wayne jumped out to a two run lead in the first inning, and West Michigan found themselves playing catchup the rest of the afternoon.
Three Whitecaps had two hits in the loss, Justin Henry, Hayden Parrott, and Jordan Newton. One of Netwon's hits was a home run, his second of the year, in the seventh inning. Newton's homer was the only extra base hit of the game for West Michigan.
Matt Hoffman got the start for West Michigan, he pitched three and a third innings, taking the loss. Hoffman allowed two runs on three hits, walking three and striking out five. Brandon Hamilton pitched four and a third innings of relief following Hoffman. Hamilton allowed five earned runs on six hits, while walking two, and striking out five batters of his own. Kelvin Cedano next pitched a scoreless third of an inning, giving up a hit and striking out a batter. Finally, Andrew Hess pitched a 1-2-3 ninth inning, striking out a batter.
The Whitecaps will now enjoy a well deserved break, with the All-Star game taking place on Tuesday in Midland. We wish all the West Michigan players playing in the All-Star game the best of luck!
